Recommended Smartphone Travel Applications

Currently my list consists of applications that are accessible on at least iPhones. Some may be available on other platforms, but my personal experience so far is iPhone only.


Taxi Services

Uber
Application Cost: Free
Currently available in more countries than any other, this San Francisco based company is growing very rapidly and is the highest recommended taxi service application. However, be aware that there is a strong blacklash happening with Uber in many countries, so make sure you have a backup option! Uber was just banned throughout Germany.

Starting in Brazil, this company took South America by storm and spread out across the world.

Application Cost: Free
This taxi applications is gaining a lot of traction in South East Asia.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam


MyTaxi
Application Cost: Free
A German based company currently trying to expand through out the world.

Countries Available: 6
Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, USA, and Poland

HailO
Application Cost: Free
This company has been around since 2011and according to their website, averages a customer every 2 seconds.

Countries Available: 5
United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Singapore, and Japan


Language

iTranslate
Application Cost: Free
A very simple translation application, pretty straightforward interface and operation. For $4.99 you can go Premium and get vocal submission and unlimited translations! Or, you can download an additional free application for vocal, see more below.


Speak & Translate
Application Cost: Free
Offers both text-to-text and speech-to-speech, this is a pretty handy application and is pretty accurate! It does have it’s fair share of ads though. Premium offers no ads and no translation limits.

It’s always helpful to know what direction you’re walking when you’re in unknown territory. You’ll also probably come across someone offering directions and instead of saying Left or Right, they’ll use East and West.

Application Cost: Free
Unless you’re traveling to a country that has the same types of measurements, you’ll probably need this at some point.

Currency+
Application Cost: Free
Most countries have their own currency, so there’s a very good chance you’ll want to know how much money you’re actually spending by converting it to your native currency.


Photography

Photoshop Express
Application Cost: Free
A pretty powerful photo manipulator/enhancer for being completely free!

Darkroom
Application Cost: Free
Another powerful little photo enhancer, you can also use both PS Express and Darkroom in conjuction to get some really nice looking photographs.

ColorPop
Application Cost: Free
This is a very cool photo application that allows you to highlight certain areas of color while turning the rest black & white along with the ability to recolor a photo differently (though this is a pay option).
